Catalan Sovereignty Denied

mas-pacta-la-pregunta-de-la-consulta-quiere-que-cataluna-sea-un-estadoTuesday, March 25 the Spanish Constitutional Court declared that the planned referendum for self-determination in Catalonia is illegal in a sentence that annuls the regional Parliament of Catalonia’s declaration of sovereignty, the first step towards holding a referendum.
The dictated sentence warns that “in the Constitutional framework an autonomous community cannot unilaterally convoke a referendum for self-determination to decide on its integration in Spain,” becoming an obstacle to Catalonian regional president Artur Mas to hold a consultation next November 9.
From the presidential residence, the president of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, ruled out holding a referendum for Catalonia’s sovereignty, branding it as “unconstitutional”. The leader appealed to “the indissoluble Spanish unity” and criticized the President of the Catalan Autonomous Government Artur Mas’ way of proceeding.
Rajoy said he regrets “initiatives that break up society encourage division and fill the citizenship with doubt” and assured that he is making an effort so the Catalan population will not be adversely affected by “this thirst for Catalan sovereignty.”
In accordance with its functional proposals, Unrepresented United Nations Organisation (UUN) asks the Spanish government to respect the sovereign right of the Catalan people to choose their destiny.
